The Jacksonville Area Sexual Minority Youth Network is a non-profit youth services organization for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and questioning (LGBTQ) youth ages 13-23, in Jacksonville, Florida.
On July 15th, JASMYN became the recipient of a generous donation from Dr. Paul Schilling and James Dutton of Vilano Beach. The pair has purchased and donated the building next door to our current JASMYN House building on Peninsular Place to meet our critical need for additional space. The gift includes a portion of the costs associated with the building’s repair and renovation.
“After 12 years in our current location, the number of youth we serve has grown exponentially and we have literally outgrown the building, “said Cindy Watson, Executive Director. ” We have immediate needs for more program areas and desperately need additional space to accommodate our increased counseling staff and growing HIV Clinic. The additional building will allow us to dedicate space for these and other services.”
Bruce Musser, JASMYN Board chair, explained that the additional building is the first major step to help the organization function optimally while its Board continues with a planning and expansion process it began more than a year ago. “Paul and Jay really understand our immediate needs and ultimate goals. They hope to support us with an eventual capital campaign that will provide the space we need to truly expand for the future. ..space that will provide for our youth programs and services as well as gathering space for use by the community for other programs and events. We are so grateful for their belief in us and for sharing our vision,” said Musser.
“JASMYN is a warm and caring organization providing advocacy services to the at-risk and vulnerable LGBT youth of Jacksonville,” said Schilling and Dutton in a statement. “Their commitment to support and empower LGBT youth is remarkable. This donation represents a celebration of their 20th anniversary and we see it as a strategic step in JASMYN’s future growth. We’re so pleased that this building provides the segue they need to move them closer to launching a capital campaign.”
We’re expecting work on the additional building to be completed by late October. In the meantime, we’re busy planning how the space in each building will be used to optimize the staffing, programs and services for our youth. ”One thing’s for sure,” said Watson, “all of the additional space will get filled quickly.”
